We just completed the 1st Chapter (on our 2nd attempt). Good times, but we did take a few actions that almost felt like cheating...but seemed to fall within the rules. If you haven't completed the 1st Chapter, then I don't recommend continuing to read this.
- In the Kitchen tunnels, we had 5 cheese on the wheel and we had already had a Surge in the room. Instead of progressing to the Kitchen, we decided to wait it out and pull another cheese. It was inevitable that the Hourglass would move in the Kitchen anyway, so we decided to just trigger it where a Surge wouldn't occur.
- In the Kitchen, we used the Cheese on the table to act as a buffer to being attacked. Since the Roaches on the table only had a 1/6 chance of removing Cheese, it seemed like an easy decision to place the fishhook and camp out up there.
- In the Kitchen we were able to successfully defeat all of the Roaches except one, which we let sit on the table with the cheese. We then proceeded to continue Searching the room until every character successfully searched. Due to the dice, this took quite awhile and felt VERY gamey. The Roach only ate a single Cheese on like 6-7 attempts. We were able to get some nice items using these shenanigans. (Granted, there is always the risk of pulling a treachery card).
- After dropping back down in the Kitchen tunnels, we realized that we were at 5 on the wheel again, so we waited it out since there wasn't an Encounter card present. That was the 2nd time we filled the wheel without having to deal with a Surge.
- In the Courtyard, we chose NOT to move several times. Most of the time, we legitimately didn't want to move for strategic reasons. But since we weren't moving, we didn't roll the die, and the Crow didn't have a chance to attack. We rationalized that the Crow only noticed the targets if they were moving.
- Along those same lines, one time we went to move out of the Tree Entrance (where mice are protected), but when we rolled a '1' it seemed to be the best idea to just stay inside the tree. We weren't sure if the mouse should take the damage or not. We assigned the damage, but we could see how the mouse may just balk on exiting the area as (s)he saw the Crow diving down..
- Completely within the game system, but I felt pretty badass when I used Chain Lightning to defeat 2 Roaches and a Centipede in one shot.
- Since we're playing the game as a Campaign, we camped out towards the end to maximize Cheese possibilities so that we could Level Up as much as possible.
We had quite a bit of fun playing, but I feel like we worked the system a bit. In particular, camping out on the table with the Roach seemed to be abusing the system....
Awesome fun though.
