Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Reviewers with video and/or blog and/or text etc. that love M&M

Hey y'all,

So when I'm looking for game recommendations, or a new game to try I usually hop over to YouTube to see what reviewers say in their Top Ten lists, etc. Namely, I check out DiceTower, BoardGameBrawl, and a few others. However, after flipping through pages of YouTube videos I'm astounding that none of these reviewers really love Mice and Mystics, and I find I play games for different reasons than they play. (Perhaps I'm a closet role-playing gamer, rather than a board gamer )

Therefore, I find it really hard to get game recommendations if the reviewer doesn't like Mice and Mystics.

Does anyone know of a game reviewer that they follow (or not) that really likes Mice & Mystics? This is very much my #1 game, and I would like to find a reviewer with similar taste.

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Mice and Mystics as a "gateway" to Gloomhaven?

by keithlommel

I kickstarted the second printing of Gloomhaven, hoping to play it with my wife later this year. She's never played this kind of "dungeon crawl" game before, though. I'm thinking of picking up Mice and Mystics as a lighter introduction to the genre. You know... so that when the 21 pound behemoth arrives she can say "Wow, it's like that fun mouse game, only bigger!" rather than "What the hell were you thinking?!"angry

Having not played either game, I'd appreciate any thoughts from those who have more experience.

I realize that the combat mechanics are quite different (Gloomhaven having a very tactical card-based system, while M&M is just a basic dice-chucker), but I'm hoping that too will work out well for us... Just as the dice-rolling starts getting old and we begin longing for more significant tactical decisions, that 21 pound box will magically appear on the doorstep! whistle

Thoughts or other suggestions, anyone?

This commission was easily my favorite so far. I could paint this set 100 times and not get bored of painting these adorable models. Just thought I'd share something I enjoyed doing so much.

So, I have absolutely no experience with painting miniatures, but would like to have nice painted minis for the next time I play.

I own absolutely no art supplies of any type and was wondering what art supplies I'd need to paint them as well as how much I should expect to spend on the supplies.

I posted this over on Gloomhaven forum, but I thought maybe I could fine help here too.

Hello,

My wife and I love Mice & Mystics. I love Descent 1st ed, but she would never play that. If I can favorably compare Gloom to M&M, I think I've got a shot at her trying it out. I think she would actually enjoy it if she can look past the skeletons and stuff she will call D&D (in a negative context).

So, has anyone played both? Can you compare positives? She loves story moments, how do these compare? She likes the growing campaign going from one scenario to the next. She likes how the story lines up with each quest with a theme. She likes co-ops. She is intrigued by Pandemic Legacy, but hasn't played it. She likes the initiative track.

Anyone have positive ways to say these things are the same or better? I just need a good sales pitch to get her over the hump of her preconceived notions. She might really like it if she gives it a try.

PS-I'm aware the combat system is very different, and the game is much more complex than M&M.

This is... rather special for me.

It's with happiness and a little bit of sadness to finally say that I completed the entire Mice & Mystics "Sorrow and Remembrance" story.

*sniff*

This is not an actual "review" or a "session" report.

I bought this game when it first came out, where it sat on the shelf for several years, largely unplayed and forgottened.

I was going to put the game up for sale, trade away or just give it to my niece, that I took the game off the shelf to make sure all the components were still there. While looking through everything, flipping through the Story booklet and gawking at all the cool figures, I decided to sit down and actually play it.

*QUE SAD MUSIC*

Youtube Video

It took me about 2 months of on-and-off gaming. Setting up the entire game on my dining table, putting it away when I expected guests or whatever. Setting it up all over again, re-reading the rules over and over, asking questions on this forum, getting aggravated over the sometimes God-like unfairness of the dice rolls, then Lily one-shots a centiepede and saves the day, getting a surge right before the mice were going to finish the last tile, eagerly reading on to find out what new twists and challenges the game will throw at me on the next chapter.

cry

And now it's all over.

What a great game. What a ride. WOW. Joy, sadness, YES I found an Enchanted Bow! NO I LOST THE ENCHANTED BOW! C'mon baby no cheese no cheese... *rolls dice* NO CHEESE! What's on the next tile? I'm GAMBLING with the rats now? FUG IT! SUMMON CAT! GET EM BRODIE! C'mon LILY kill SOMETHING JEEEEZ! *Rolls for Lily's attack using Power Shot* 4 Cheese rolls? CHEESE MASTER? Push the End of the Game marker up one!!

laugh

It's the first board game where I was genuinely inspired to paint all the figures. I claim NOT to be an expert at it, but I'm proud of the way it turned out. This is mine. I painted it. Now, my nieces shall have it.

At the end...

SPOILERS
[o]
coasting down the water way, using both a timely LEVITATE and TELEPORT... the ride ended, and I still feel dizzy from it all.

GG!

[/o]

Now to pass the game on to my nieces, and hope they experience the same roller coaster as I did.

Hello, I can understand and translate English to Spanish without any problem, would this be playable with other people who don't understand English? Since it's fully cooperative I'm hoping it'll work, the story I can translate it as I read it, but I'm worried about different abilities or if players have a secret hand of cards or something like that.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a copy of M&M, but there is none to be found in local game stores. Also the prices on amazon went through the roof... is there a chance that it was put out of print and never to return?

Thank you!

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Chapter 9 story is odd?

by Lennox_MacDuff

First, yeah,it's actually really interesting game mechanics, but Vurst switching allegiance back and forth throughout the Chapter is just ... odd? I wish that there had been some mind control magic explanation written in to the story or something, otherwise it just seems silly that the mice continue to accept him as an ally after he's already tried to kill them, sided with them, and then turned on them again and again.

The other main story oddity is that Nez is specifically excluded as a mouse you can play in this chapter (because he's leading the other 3 mice in Chapter 10) and yet he features prominently in the story moment that starts the chapter.

Another minor oddity as when you get to the end and Tilda and Filch both show up in the final story moment in spite of the chapter being limited to only Collin and one other mouse.

Then a bit of a shrug at the end as big V showed up in all her evilness and ... Lily fired a shot at her with her bow, scored only 1 hit, but Vanestra rolled no shields , so that was kind of an anti-climactic end to the chapter. laugh

This is a really good game, but I find myself wishing that the story had been tied to the mechanics a bit more.

This might be well-known to some of you, but it took me ages to find these story moments after they were taken down from the PHG website.

Their page said: "NOTE: This collection is no longer available from PlaidHatGames.com. The MP3s have been passed off to the Jack Vasel Memorial Fund, which is working on a solution to offer these MP3s."

On jackvasel.org it is not very well advertised where to find them, but here is the link: http://www.jackvasel.org/miceandmysticsaudio

Go make your donation if you don't own it already. It's 2 times worth it.

So I've only played through Sorrow of Remembrance and have started Heart of Glorm. But in Ch 10 S&R [o]there is a vision of a beautiful, young, sick woman and some hints of some type of relationship between her and King Andon.[/o] Is that ever expanded upon in expansions? And who do you think that women is? And what do you think the story between them is?

My daughter loves to play Lily and has the Enchanted Bow. If she rolls a bow/star, she gets an extra shot. But if she eliminates the minion with that first shot, can the second shot be used against a different target?
We have been playing that she could, and sometimes she takes out two minions in her turn. Anyone else play it this way?

I really want to love this game more than we currently do now. My family pushed themselves through the base campaign but the length of playtime and often frustrating bad luck all but killed the desire to move into Heart of Glorm and Downwood Tales. And I SOOOO want to go there. I've looked into many of the proposed house rules, and some I love (like fixed movement) and others I feel change the game beyond it's scope.

One of the things I always admired about HeroQuest was it gave a subtle advantage to the heroes in that enemy figures only defended on a single face of the die, not the two that heroes had. So what if M&M was the same? What if enemy minions defended on cheese rolls only? Would it impact the playtime? I have the feeling it would cut down individual encounters somewhat (if not make them simpler) and drastically cut down the frustration of ranged combat (rolling a couple of bows FINALLY only to have them so easily blocked)?

I know that people probably don't know anything about this, but has anybody heard of other expansions coming for this amazing game?! My kids are just getting to the age where we'll be able to play through everything I have (which is everything available so far) and I'm hoping there are still plans and ideas for more expansions to come out.

Anyone in the know? cool

Hey y'all,

So I'm a big time M&M player (base game) and it's definitely my favorite dungeon crawl/light rpg.

Unfortunately, I'm itching for another dungeon crawl that will let me relive those old days of playing D&D. You know, late nights, 3-4 hour game sessions at a time, monster slaying, loot getting, and unhealthy snacks (mainly cheetos/pizza/pepsi)

M&M pretty much satisfies most of that craving. The story is engaging, and the characters give enough personality so that we can roleplay. However, the one thing I love about roleplaying is those out-of-combat situations where you really get to immerse yourself in the world. Whether it's at the tavern, in town, maybe an arena fight etc. More so than a dungeon dive.

I am wondering if the other expansions of M&M have plenty of out-of-combat situations/skill checks (kind of like the gambling game from Chapter 3 I think (I LOVE that), or if I should look elsewhere.

caveat: I do own Glorm, and DT (I have yet to play them (it's hard to get a group together). This post is just if I should purchase a different game to get that craving filled.

Thanks.
