Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Bookkeeping!

Hello! I'm trying to decide between Descent 2.0 and Mice and Mystics. I've watched the gameplay videos for both and I have some concerns about Mice and Mystics.

While Descent seems to have pretty straightforward play and rules, from the videos I got the impression that there is a lot of bookkeeping going on in Mice and Mystics. There are special rules for each scenarios you have to remember, multiple tracks and decks you have to keep an eye on, etc. It worries me because that is one of the main reasons why I dislike Arkham Horror. I keep forgetting the special abilites granted by the Great Old One, rolling the dice each turn for the retainers, special effects caused by the event cards, characters special powers, etc.

I feel there is a lot of moving parts in M&M that is absent from Descent 2.0

How does this work exactly? From what I understand, you can switch a mouse's initiative card that is higher up on the Initiative Track with another mouse's initiative card that is lower on the Initiative Track, and then this mouse may immediately take a turn.

Example 1 of Initiative Track order

1. Tilda
2. Rat Warrior
3. Collin (Battle Leader)
4. Nez
5. Filch

So after Collin takes his turn he uses Battle Leader to switch Tilda with Filch.

Q1. So Filch immediately takes a turn?
Q2. Does Tilda take another turn after Nez?

Example 2 of Initiative Track order

1. Tilda
2. Nez
3. Rat Warrior
4. Collin (Battle Leader)
5. Filch

Q1. Can you use Battle leader to switch Tilda with Nez and then take another turn with Nez?

Does anyone know if miniatures for the villains will be released? I don't mean for Brodie, but perhaps Captain Vurst, Elite rat warriors, Skitter-Clak...

Mice and Mystics looks like a beautiful, original game and I really want to like/buy it ! The only thing is: somehow I'm afraid it's a family game that won't appeal that much to "experienced" gamers without kids... Am I wrong in this, or, should I just go for Descent instead?

My daughter implemented her own custom "mini" into the game. Now I regret giving her my old Star Wars toys!

Last night we played part of chapter one using Tilda, Filch, Maginos, and Collin. Filch was getting cheese left and right thanks to the pilfer ability. Filch leveled once, then started distributing his cheese to Collin and Tilda. Both of them leveled, but I noticed that Collin doesn't have as many ability cards as the other mice, is there a reason for that?

Also we are running a campaign but it seems odd that we each already have 2 abilities. Do you normally hit max abilities this quick?

I've played M&M with my daughter through chapter 3 and solo through chapter 1. It has been a blast. But my real goal in getting this game was to run my daughter, niece and nephews through the game over the summer. Today is the first of our new hopefully weekly Tabletop Tuesday.

I have everything set up. I printed out playing mats from the files section which are very nice to have. I wanted a good WOW factor when they walk in the door. My niece is 10, nephew #1 is 7, nephew #2 is 5 and daughter is 5. Should be a nice mix.

The only thing to worry about in Chapter 1 is the side quest. It takes some time and Brodie tends to show up every time. But today I invited a special guest to help us contend with our favorite feline.

I really need a bigger table

I think we in the board game world get a little spoiled because sometimes expansions come out maybe every 6 months (or 1 month for lcgs) and that may lead us to underappreciate the effort and time that goes into making a board game.

With that being said, I was just wondering if their was any update or word on the expansion for M and M? I know it's been a while since we heard about the new character, and it's been a little quiet on PHG web.

Anyone know how many initiative cards are supposed to be in the box? I opened up my box and went to do a solo play through of the first scenario, and I seem to be missing initiative cards for Lily and Maginos. Or are there no cards for these two characters?

I tend to do my searches when there's only 1 enemy left on the board. That way I don't get hit with ending a round with no minions penalty. However, items like Rest Spot become pretty useless as it's a play immediately and has a condition that there are no minions on board.

Should I just wait until the minions are gone and then do searches?

I bought Mice and Mystics recently at a convention in my town. I was able to get it for 70 bucks, 5 bucks under retail (plus no shipping, and since I also bought Claustrophobia, they threw in a free copy of "The Hobbit" card game).

I have to say though, it WAS disappointing opening up the box, and seeing what was inside for 70 bucks. on the flip side, I Was EXTREMELY happy with Claustrophobia and Descent (Which I went back and bought later at a nice discount).

Claustrophobia was slightly less and had painted minis on top of some slick looking components. I haven't played it yet, but it was certainly a good feeling opening the box and seeing what was inside. The amount of tiles was also impressive.

My daughter LOVES her copy of "Wrath of Ashardalon". She wants Legend of Drizzt (She played friends copy of that first, then bought herself Wrath of Ashardalon with her birthday money last year). However, opening up the box for Mice and Mystics, she was like, "That's all?"

Honestly, that's how I felt. for the price, i kind of expected more. Granted, we haven't really jumped into the game yet (just been reading rules and looking things over), but this is more about opening up the box and seeing what is inside. Ashardalon, Claustrophobia, Descent - those all made me geek out and feel good about the cost. Mice and Mystics? I felt a bit let down in relation to what I got for 70 bucks, and am praying the gameplay lives up to the price enough to justify it.

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Mice and Mystics Scale and conversions.

This has come up a few times and since the idea interests me I figured Id share my research for those wanting more accurate minis keeping in scale with those in the game, since the game keeps to a more or less natural scale for the animals.

The mice are 25mm scale. This is the basis for all the other calculations.
Actual mice average say 75mm. This makes calculating sizes for other critters fairly easy at 1/3rd or 33%.

The average bat will be around mouse sized. Most are pretty friendly. Only a few are predatory to amphibians and mice and those would be rat sized.

Shrews and moles can get as large as rats. Some Shrews are venomous.

Common Bees and Yellow Jackets average 15mm. I've seen them up to 25-30mm. That comes to 5-10 mm at MM scale. That is a bit small so you might want to double it and say they are bumble bees and wasps which get up to twice that size. This gives then a bee or wasp up to 20mm. Hornets are even larger and would make for appropriate foes too as they are aggressive.

A Praying Mantis can get up to 100mm long, so a mantis mini should be 33mm or less.

Cats average around 400mm for males. So at MM scale Brody would be about 200mm since he is a big tough cat.

Raccoons can get between 600-1000mm, so a mini could be 200mm to 500.

Otters get 600+ long so also 200mm for a mini, or larger.

Skunks are 300-500 long, so 100mm + for a mini.

Weasels and Ferrets get 250+ long so say also 100mm.

Crows can get to 300+ mm long so the Greedy Old Crow as a mini would likely be around 100-150mm scale too.

Chipmunks range 180 to 210mm for the smallest and most common. so 60 to 70mm. But they can get substantially large, upwards of 500mm or more.

European Red Squirrels get around 200mm, so about 66mm tall.

Rabbits average also about 200mm, so about 66mm tall as well. but are obviously bulkier.

A corn snake can be around 750mm or more, so 250mm at MM scale. Id suggest against vipers and other poisonous snakes as for a mouse that is approaching an instant kill. Better to go with constrictors as it allows the mice chances to fight back and escape. For a friendly snake go with the Garter Snake. They average 550mm or more so would be around 184mm long.

A Fox can get up around 750mm or more as well so also 250mm at mini scale.

Is this game based on a book?...or is it just the story book that comes with the game that makes up the Mice and Mystics' story?

My daughter, who is 7, loved the Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH series and this game reminds me of it.
