This game has Everything I love about board gaming. Storytelling, engaging characters, beautiful artwork, great minis, and unique game mechanisms. Also the ability to make it your own if you want to put the time into it but is not a necessity to enjoy it. Anyone who wants, please post what you love about this wonderful plaid hat game!

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: How heavy is this game compared to other dungeon crawlers?

So we've been playing through the campaign for Descent (2nd ed) and also play a classic PnP RPG occasionally.

We also enjoy traditional board games a lot, from light to heavy.

Before we start the M&M campaign, I'm curious how it compares in weight to stuff like Ravenloft, Descent, and Mansions of Madness.

Also, how is the game length in reality compared to what's on the box. For comparison, when we have a group of 4-5 players for Descent, a game session will take us 2-4 hours. Will M&M probably allow us to get our dungeon fix in less time without being so light as to be unsatisfying by comparison?

I have created a spotify playlist to have as soundtracks/background music to enrich my playthrough of Mice and Mystics. This is to combine my love for music (in a lot of different genres) and board games.

Fantasy adventure!
Spotify playlist link: Mice and Mystics Gamplay Soundtrack

Play this in the background to your Mice and Mystics game plays and you'll get an adventurous feeling in a family friendly fantasy world.

Also see my Geeklist for playlists to several other games: Spotify playlists for soundtrack to bardgames

What do you think? Anything to add to it?

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: First Chapter pretty easy.....What am I doing wrong?

So my brother and I gave M&M our first trial run the other day and had a blast.

But there was one problem in my mind - the first chapter was extremely easy. Which in most cases means I was doing something wrong.

We added cheese to the minion wheel anytime a cheese was rolled during combat/defense.

We added cheese after the last character on the initiative track finished their turn and no more minions where on the board.

We did make some rule mistakes with the Crow at the end of Chapter 1.

Anything else I should look at? I re-read the manual and nothing jumps out at me. Other common mistakes?

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: An evening with my 6 yo that I will never forget

by Bob Loblaw

Ok so I just wanted to post this as a comment on the game since I never have time to write complete reviews, but hopefully this may interest someone somewhere...
Here is a little background:
So I have three kids, my oldest is turning 6 soon. I am a longtime tabletop gamer, and I have been waiting for years and dreaming of finally being able to play great games with my kids. I mean playing mouse trap is fun and all, but... You know..
Anyway, my youngest is 18 months old and still in the "lock and bolt everything down" crazy period so setting up a board game like this is out of the question while the baby is anywhere near, so I didn't have much chance to start gaming with my oldest... But last week, I told her that she could stay up while her brothers where in bed and she could have a special evening with her papa playing a game about mouse knights trying to save a kingdom.
I will remember this evening forever.

She has always been interested in my games and always wanted to play, but I could never find a game that I would like playing and she could understand and follow... Until mice and mystics. I mean, I needed to read cards for her and guid her once in a while, but every few minutes, she would surprise me with what she was planning to do and how well she understood what was going on, and she ended up being a better coop partner that some of my 30 year old friends!
And the best of it, is that mice and mystics is nowhere near dumbed down or simplistic. It's just streamlined enough to be able to conjure up a really good dungeon crawl and an amazingly good atmosphere without needing a heavy rule set. It has simple but interesting combat, there is meaningful decision making during the scenarios, (like taking on side quest for example) and the design of the boards make it really feel like you are questing as tiny rodents in a huge castle. I mean using a spoon and catapulting your partner up a table is just really good stuff. There is an advancement system while playing a campaign that, while nothing more that bringing over an ability card,at least makes it so that she feels like its her own character that she follows during the adventure. I mean it's more than descent 1st Ed. had before the expansions... Speaking of descent, play time in M&M is far more manageable than the first edition, running around about the same length for a scenario as descent 2nd edition.

We haven't gone though the hole campaign yet, but the way her eyes sparkled when she was explaining how she would get rid of the three rats surrounding us tells me we will probably finish it in no time.
Before putting her to bed after finishing her first game, she turned to me and said" Thanks for letting me play one of your grown up games, I can't wait to get to the end and battle that nasty spider queen Vanestra and save the king!"
Say what you will about books, movies or video games, but I have never seen her imagination go so wild as it was when she was guiding her little mouse through a castle battling tiny creatures with dice and cards.

I noticed on the PHG website that they sell alot of T-Shirts for summoner wars. Does anyone know of any talk of any M&M T-shirts being available from PHG? If you would be interested in buying one show your support here and maybe Jerry and/or Colby will see it and decide to make some available!

Thanks all!

Too bad I lost my complete post yesterday, but here's a link to the Myth Kickstarter project. It contains loads of figures, many of which may be suitable for M&M. Of special note are the rat minions, rat captains (with crossbows), rat miniboss, and rat boss. Also very worthy are the Arachnids, basically bug warriors. The scorpion captains and centipede boss look especially suitable. Only 16 hours left!

Was wondering whether I should get this or Gears of War.

I would like to compare them in terms of difficulty/challenge, and replayability.

Anyone mind to share with me about the game difficulty?
Is it easy to play or it's challenging?

For Jerry of course,
Just wondering on how the first small expansion is coming along? The one with Glorm and Nere. Will we be getting any kind of announce date soon as when it might come out. I know you said it was in its finishing stages a while back so just curious. Maybe we could see some updated pics of the characters? Thanx Pat

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Keeping More Inventory Items Balancing System

Hey guys - I'd like to get your thoughts on this idea. Please comment if you've done something similar or you have any thoughts on how this might affect gameplay/balance.

We love the idea of collecting items without the restriction of saving only one item per character, since this feels more immersive to us in an RPG sense (such an integral part of character building!). We are thinking of balancing the gameplay by incrementing the start and end points of the pages for each chapter (creating harder encounters from the get-go) based on the number of items kept, maybe according to something like this:

# Items Kept -- Page Adjustment
1-6 ---------------- none
7-10 -------------- +1
11-14 ------------ +2
15-18(max) ----- +3

Hey everyone! Been enjoying Mice and Mystics an awful lot, but with a young child at home, the rolling sound of dice always gets horrible frowns from the missus... so I made a free dice rolling app for Android, allowing me to play M&M in silent mode.

I've shared it on BGG here: Mice and Mystics Dice Rolling App, so feel free to download it if you have an Android device. Thanks Jerry (and PHG folks) for such an excellent game, looking forward to the expansions!

I have a few questions. It said you only 2/3 pieces of information. But won't you get all three anyway? Also each piece of information moves the clock. You start one one and end on five. So if you have no surges it would end of four. So can you not have any surges on this one?

Hey there everybody,
So I recently had an accident, and torn my rotator cuff. I need some help from some clever minds to devise a way for me to be able to paint, but only with one hand. this may be a dumb request but I cant think of a way to do it. I have always used both hand for painting, being able to use the brush and rotate the model freely as needed. Now I know that nothing I can make will give me that degree of freedom but I can't rightly imagine painting with it the miniature just set on the table.

Advise, suggestions, comments? I welcome all.

Figure if I have to have my arm immobilized for several months, then why not catch up on some painting.

Thanks so much,
~Brian

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: The reasons behind the colors of room tile rule icons in the story book

by hextr1p

As I'm wrapping up the story book layout for the upcoming Mice and Mystics small expansion, "Heart of Glorm", I thought I'd drop a little designer insight that many who play the game may otherwise never notice:

Did you know that the Room Tile Rule Icons are each colored the way they are for a reason?

Story Moments are 'Collin' red because the base game had the young prince as the central figure.

Optional Side Plots are 'Lily' green because in the base game, the mice go on a side-plot of sorts to rescue Lily.

Special Rules are 'Maginos' yellow due to Maginos being a wise mystic who knows the rules of the castle.

Special Setups are 'Nez' orange because Nez is a tinkerer and likes to set things up.

Special Searches are 'Filch' gray because Filch is the rogue/thief of the group, and what entices thieves more than searching for and finding shiny objects? Well, nothing really.

Special Surges are 'Tilda' purple being that Tilda is somewhat of the 'mother bear' of the group. So when more enemies fill a room tile due to a surge, she serves a truly integral part in battle as both a warrior and a healer.

So there you go! Some Mice and Mystics trivia for you. And also, truth be told, this color coding also helps me while laying out all of those icons throughout the story book.

I have this game for quite some time and played only a couple of times. I bought this to play with my 6yo. However, every game I've played I had a lot of frustration having to lookup the rules and conditons for each chapter. I watched the youtube playthrough series. Maybe I'm just stupid, but I still have the feeling I'm not getting the hang of this game. I play fairly complex games (Eclipse, Dominant Species) without trouble... Why does Mice and Mystics give me so much trouble?

For instance in chapter 2, how do the tiles connect between the courtyard and the tunnels? I just don't get it.

I'm reluctant to play this game again. Please boardgamegeeks, help me love this game. What are your tips to get the hang of is game? Should I play solo a couple of times? Anything else?

Hi all,

I play a lot of solitaire games, D&D, Mage Knight, Magic Realm, Legendary solo mode and Gears of War.

I like a lot of what I see here and I think I could get my wife to play it with me.

That said, I'll probably want to play it solo at some point.

How's the replayability?

Hey all,
I was wanting to pick up a model to represent Captain Vurst in the game. Was thinking about a Skaven from Warhammer Fantasy. But which one? Couldn't find anything I liked and wanted to know, has anyone else out there has done this? Thank you in advance for the links and other helpful information!
