Anyone else notice that the Filch mini looks like he is missing his right leg? I realize it's supposed to be kind of hidden beneath his cloak, but it just doesn't look right,in particular when it's painted.↧

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Chapter 3: The Grapes of Rats... aka, Fish in a Barrel
by JYoder
*** SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED CHAPTER 3 ***
I've been playing this game with my young daughter and we've both had a great time. We just tried chapter 3, The Grapes of Rats. We did very well, getting the disguises and having enough cheese to beat all the rats at the dice game. Lots of thematic fun! We had some nice items too -- shields and extra attack dice, along with nice abilities. Then we got to the final room of the game with 3 of our 4 mice at full life. (The 4th had 2/3.)
What was a merry band of mice clipping through a fun story suddenly turned into the end of a Dirty Dozen movie, with all 4 mice shot to death in slow motion amid pitiful screams for mercy. (OK, I know they're captured, but you get the idea.) Let's just say it was... uh... memorable for my daughter.
Before Prince Collin even took a turn, he was taken out. And though Filth got to the top of the chair on his second turn, and he took out 1 minion, he was eliminated right after. Maginos' Chain Lightning failed miserably, except against 1, and Lily whiffed. We did go for minions rather than Vurst to cut back on the number of enemy rolls (but only killing 2 total) and even if we had gone for Vurst (in the hope of making the others flee) we'd have only gotten 2 wounds on him at best... yet he rolls better defense, so it maybe would have been less.
Their good shots, our inability to block shots, and most of the enemies being at the top of the initiative (along with Vurst rolling cheese after cheese after cheese after cheese) just shredded us, especially, like I said, with full life Collin gone before he could twitch a whisker.
I double checked the rules -- I had rotated targets that minions could shoot at... mice can only get uncaptured if there are no minions ( so that's out)... and mice can't leave the room while minions are present (so that's out)...
Did we just get extremely unlucky with our nicely buffed heroes, or am I missing a key game/strategy element?

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Finally coming to the table
by wmreed
Well, after more than 6 months Mice and Mystics is finally coming to the table. I kept trying to get my family interested, but they'll have none of it. This weekend I decided to play it solo. Put on the mp3 of Rich Sommer reading the prologue while I set up, and played through chapter 1.
Finished it fairly easily with Colin, Nez, Maginos, and Filch. Wrote down my groups' abilities, and the one Search card to which they were entitled, and cleaned it up.
The next day I set up again to play chapter 2 with Colin, Nez, Tilda, and Lily. Got crushed several times due to bad luck with the crow, and spiders and centipedes surging on the final tile. Then I realized I hadn't chosen starting abilities for Lily or Tilda. Then I realized the final tile had a special surge of Rat Warrior. Then I realized that Tilda can use First Aid for only 1 cheese. Then I did better and finished the chapter successfully.
This is definitely another great game from Plaid Hat Games! I think I'm going to get City of Remnants, even though I haven't played it yet. I have confidence in PHG.
Now I've got to finish my grading so I can play another chapter...

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: 19 pgs of rules, a 24 min rules video, & 280+ rules questions, and...
by bgm1961
... and this game is for 7 year olds???Hi all,
I’ll be visiting some of the grand kids (8 & 10) next week and of course will bring several games. I’ve previously introduced them to ‘Ticket To Ride’, ‘Betrayal At the House on the Hill’, ‘Memoir ’44’, and ‘Dominion’. The 10 yo enjoys them all while the 8 yo will only play TtR, and even then he loses focus and becomes disinterested in playing by the rules. (He likes to place “trains” wherever he can just to do so, without any regard to strategy or goals. OK – he’s (a young) eight after all).
After hearing about M&M - especially the raves of how great it is for the young kids - and watching a couple video reviews, I ordered a copy with hopes of bringing it next week. It arrived yesterday. The first book I grabbed form the box was heavy for a kids game, I thought. Whew… it’s only the story book… surely the rules would be much lighter for what everyone says is a wonderful game for the children. Huh? Nineteen pages. Seriously? I’ve played complex games with less pages.
Then I watched the 24 min “Watch It Played” video featured on the game’s web page. Given its length, I expected that a few minutes would be devoted to the rules with the rest of the time being examples of play – like a tutorial. Well, my head was spinning upon reaching the end. Twenty four solid minutes of nothing but rules! I thought to myself, “And I’m supposed to explain this to my 8 yo grandkid who has trouble with Ticket To Ride?! Hmmm… maybe not”.
Then I came here to count 280+ entries in the rules section of the M&M Forum. That’s probably the middle of the road compared to other games, but there’s a direct correlation between the number of rules questions and the complexity of a game. So again, I was surprised to see so many questions for what’s supposed to be a game enjoyed by 7 yo’s (or by 8 yo’s as voted by BGG voters).
So the question is, does the sheer amount of rules belie the game’s simplicity that everyone keeps talking about in these forums? Or do I need to rejuvenate a couple brain cells and get a smarter grandkid?
Thx!

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Need help deciding whether to buy or not
by AvidHunter
From what I understand the game has an over arching story line that continues from game session to game session or scenario to scenario and links them together. Is that correct?
I'm looking for a game that is low complex, tons of theme, playable solo and also enjoyable for non-gamers.
Does this fit that?
I enjoy the D&D line of games but one of the things I do not like is that each scenario has you starting at 1st level back outside the area starting from scratch again.
Do you get to keep the stuff and level you have acquired?
I love what a game like Ambush!does with character building and making a story. But I don't want that complexity right now.
Thanks for any help

by Alderdust
I am just curious what you all took with the tinkerer's treasure and why you feel its the best choice. I decided to choose the thimble helm for Nez I felt like anytime a hero would be captured it was not because of minions but because I kept them hanging back doing ranged attack and searching rather than in the front lines and they always seemed to draw a treachery card....mostly poison cheese

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: How does this play as an adults only game?
by jgortner
Hi,My wife and I love gaming, fantasy, literature and the sorts. So really we're just big kids I suppose. But that does not mean we would enjoy a game that has very little strategy and/or is mostly shallow in its game play.
We have watched and read reviews and looked through countless pictures. The theme is wonderful but we though we should ask the community how the game is regarding decisions throughout the game, strategy, and depth.
If I may ask the audience a few questions!
> Are there a good bit of choices throughout the game that affect game play?
> Is there a light-medium amount of strategy involved or are many of the turns auto-pilot?
> How well does the game play 2 player (2 adults)?
Thanks!

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: cards size - FFG sleeves
by dorelas
Sorry for this apparently dumb question but in my own defence: it has been asked often enough here on bgg as well as on Plaid Hat forums and it has never been answered in a non-contradictory concise manner.i want to find proper sleeves for this game and unfortunatley i dont have it by hand.
i need the size for the SMALL cards in the game , and if you happen to know , i would like to know which sleeve colour from FFG would be appropriate form them.
Can you also please tell me the TOTAL AMOUNT of small cards in the game? i am not sure which names represent which size in the game's content description.
Thanks in advance.

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Pre-built character trees for kids.
by Mr Skeletor
I want to start playing a 'campagin' witgh the kiddies. One of the biggest choices in the game, which I want to eliminate, is which power to give a character when they level up.
Rather than having the player choose a card on upgrade (which will overwhelm a kid) I was wondering if anyone had any 'pre-built' progression trees for each character.
That way when they level up they simply get the next card on the list.
eg Nez gets X as his starting power, Y on first level up, Z next, etc...
Any M&M experts done this?

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: This game is HARD!
by krakrs
I just need to rant and profess to the BGG world that I am completely inadequate with this game. Am I the only one that has a 25% win rate on chapter one - withOUT going to the kitchen?!? My wife and I tried the kitchen for the first time last night and promptly got our rears handed to us. We kept rolling minion cheese and that didn't help us at all. Overall, man, I rank this difficulty (not mechanically) and win rate with that of Arkham Horror (which I enjoy more when I lose than M&M).↧
Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Played for the first time, but miss more variety
So, as a huge fan of Mouse Guard I was really excited to buy and play this game. It took me sometime but I finally did. It is actually a pretty good game, but I have to say, playing the first adventure I was already kind of tired of fighting the same 3 rats, 6 roachs, and etc... Specially because I knew they would be the same minions i would have to deal for the entirety o the game.
Is there any solutions for this problem? Is there any expansions with more minos that add more diversity to the group?
I'm used to play Descent, so maybe I was expecting more in this aspect. I also grew up playing hero quest and roleplaying games in general with a really ample variety of foes.

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: Dust, Glitter, and Drunken Nez.
by Omega2064
Well, thanks to one of my patrons comissioning specifically so I could finally get the game. Mice and Mystics arrived on the doorstep yesterday morning in good condition. (Apparently no promo cards though.)I have to say this is a suprisingly heavy box!
Unboxing proceeds and some quick observations and question.
1: The books are covered in some sort of fine dust or powder. First time Ive ever seen that in a box. No damage. Just... odd...
2: The minis... er... glisten in spots. Best guess is this is glue. Though its in a few odd spots where nothing was glued. Not a problem. Just... odd...
3: Lastly is Nez. He's leaning backwards at about a 15-20 degree angle.
Any suggestions on how to get him standing up properly? I am considering the old hot water option but want to know what others think first.
And again... Heavy box! This is the first game box I've had in ages that was actually heavy.
